Someone with a bigger brain than me needs to explain this. Doing it in-OS just doesn't seem like it should work. I have been working with DOS and Windows for over 20 years, and I'm accustomed to always having to reboot to perform system partition cloning before the OS has fully loaded. so what if I delete or copy files while it is cloning? How does it not end up with a disk image that contains partial files or directories? How on earth does it do this? What is preventing Windows update (or one of the hundreds of other background apps or services) from changing the data while the drive is being copied? How does MR accomodate for this? It doesn't even prevent the user from doing things. What boggles my mind though, is how MR can image or clone an operating system drive while the OS is live. As with most boot-drive cloning I have found the need to do some extra command line steps to get cloned drives bootable, but overall everything works as expected. I'm super impressed with how well it works. It's very easy to use and can really save your life! If you are looking for alternatives, we recommend you to try Acronis True Image and EaseUS Disk Copy.Based on recommendations here at r/datahoarder and other places, I recently started using Macrium Reflect for making backup images or for cloning a drive when upgrading. If you care about the safety of your documents, take a moment to create a mirror image of your hard drive with Macrium Reflect. Also, Macrium Reflect lets you create rescue disks, but unfortunately only for Linux, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. What doesn't seem that easy is the scheduled backup tool: it works with XML template files and novice users will surely find it confusing.

Macrium Reflect is very easy to use because it lets you create images via an assistant that guides you through the whole process in just a few simple steps. The complete backup solution for commercial use, designed for endpoint backup of business-critical PCs.

Of course, disk images don't make sense if you store them on the same hard drive you're copying, so you'll need to use an extra storage device (external or not) or a networked drive to save your mirror image.
